Greetings! If you were contemplating joining the Rock Creek Christmas Count, a repeat call for volunteers and some more information.
First, DC Audubon has been assigned the quadrant of the park that includes favorites like Military Field, the Nature Center and the Maintenance Yard area. This is a good area for the usual winter suspects like Juncos, Yellow-Bellied Sapsuckers, owls and hawks. A few years ago a Great Horned Owl was heard in the area on count day! A first in a very long time. Of course, Brown Creepers are back too.
If you are worried about hhe weather, the forcast for Saturday (12/15) morning is low 34, high 41, partly cloudy with only a 10% chance of precipitation. Not too bad for December. We start at 7 a.m. Drop me a line if you are interested in joining us at savetheocean at yahoo.com
